Kurt Vonnegut

April 13, 2007

A remarkable writer died on April 11, 2007; may he rest in peace.

“Everything was beautiful, and nothing hurt.”
~Slaughterhouse Five, Kurt Vonnegut

“‘We probably could have saved ourselves, but we were too damned lazy to try very hard … and too damn cheap,’ he once suggested carving into a wall on the Grand Canyon, as a message for flying-saucer creatures.”

Read the full obit on CNN (though I’m sure there will be far better ones on other websites quite soon): http://www.cnn.com/2007/SHOWBIZ/books/04/12/obit.vonnegut.ap/index.html

I’m still holding on to hope that it’s some kind of masterful hoax. :[

Why all the sad faces? All he did was die. What more could you have expected from him?

Kurt Vonnegut was terrific. His was a voice of stentorian stature. Insightful man, insightful work. I know he was retired, but I still kept holding out hope for one more novel. May he rest in Paradise for as long as the bloody Universe holds together. “We’re–we’re going to Paradise now?” said Constant. “I–I’m going to get into Paradise?” “Don’t ask me why, old sport,” said Stony, “but somebody up there likes you.”

He taught a writing clinic I went to at FSU. One of the best writers from America. Poo-tee-weet?

Well, I think all the good one-liners Vonnegut wrote have been taken already, so I’ll simply say that it truly is a dimmer day than yesterday without his brilliance in it. Fortunately, he will always be there. All we have to do is make like Billy Pilgrim and get unstuck in time. It’s just that Kurt beat us to the punch.

Awwww, he came to my college (I never got to meet him) a long time ago, they still have the chalk board he wrote on and have it framed and preserved.

“And if I should ever die, God forbid, I hope you will say, ‘Kurt is up in heaven now.’ That’s my favorite joke.” – Kurt Vonnegut

Kurt is up in heaven now. :-)
